Children's Book Publishing

Picture books and early readers taken from manuscript to a printed, retail-ready book.

  • Free consultation
  • A written quote, specific to your book
  • You keep full ownership
Overview

For parents, educators, and first-time authors with a children's story and no illustrator, formatting knowledge, or print contacts of their own. Children's publishing has its own rules: page-count conventions, reading-level and vocabulary bands, illustration-to-text pacing, and trim sizes that survive little hands.

We run the whole pipeline for authors in Chicago and across the United States: manuscript edit, illustration, layout, metadata, full-color printing, and retail listing, all in your name.

Process

A simple 6-step process that keeps your book moving forward

The same clear sequence on every project: you always know what happens next.

  1. Discovery

We start by understanding your idea, goals, audience, and the stage you are currently at.

  2. Planning

The structure, content, and overall approach are organized so everything has clarity from the beginning.

  3. Strategy

We create a clear direction for your project, including the right service recommendations and a practical roadmap.

  4. Creation

We begin the writing, development, editing, or design work based on your project needs.

  5. Refinement

The work is polished, reviewed, and prepared to meet professional publishing standards.

  6. Publishing & Growth

Once the work is ready, we guide you toward publishing, presentation, and the next steps for author growth.

In brief
Children's publishing has its own rules: page-count conventions, reading-level and vocabulary bands, illustration-to-text pacing, and trim sizes that survive little hands.

Before we start

Before we start

Published in your name, set up to be found. Good children's book publishing starts with the decisions behind the work. Here is what to think about, what to prepare, and how to make your reviews more useful.

Note

Your book,
your name on it.

  1. Decide what you are publishing

Ebook, paperback, hardcover, audiobook, or all of them. Each format has its own file requirements, pricing considerations, and platform rules, and the order you release them in affects the launch. The plan starts with that decision.

  2. Get the metadata right the first time

Title, subtitle, description, categories, and keywords decide where your book appears and who sees it. They are easier to set correctly before launch than to repair afterwards, so research comes before the upload.

  3. Keep the keys

Accounts, listings, and files are set up so you own and control them. Keep your login details, your final files, and your cover sources together; you will need them for every update, reprint, and new edition.

Come with an idea. Leave with a clear direction.

Bring your current material, your intended readers, a few references you like, and any deadline that matters. We will talk through the work and confirm what belongs in your scope.

Questions

Everything you need to know

Common questions about children's book publishing.

Do I need to already have an illustrator?

No. Most clients arrive with just the manuscript. We match you with an illustrator whose style fits your story's age group and tone, and you approve character and cover concepts before full production starts.

Who owns the illustrations once the book is done?

You do. You own your book, its text, and its artwork.

What age range can you write and design for?

Board books, picture books, and early readers. Each has different vocabulary bands, page-turn pacing, and trim conventions, and the edit and layout are built to the one your book falls into.

Can you handle a series, not just one book?

Yes. Series continuity, such as recurring characters, a consistent illustration style, and matching trim and branding across titles, is scoped as part of the brief when you tell us more than one book is planned.

Next steps

What happens after you get in touch

Three steps, and nothing starts until you have seen a plan in writing.

  1. A consultant reads it

A publishing consultant looks at what you sent and gets back to you within one business day.

  2. A free consultation

A call about your book, your goals and where it stands. No pressure to commit on the call.

  3. A written plan and quote

What your book needs and in what order, with a quote in writing, specific to your book, before anything starts.
